Hi,
In the next couple of weeks and if all going well, I hope to start Anti-TNF treatment soon. However, I've had difficulties with my liver whilst on MTX and Sulph and was wondering if any of you have experienced similar problems whilst on Anti- TNF drugs?

Hi Barbara,
I'm on mtx and humira. I have had problems with mtx, and like you with sulpha, in the past where my liver enzymes have been raised but have been able to go back on the mtx, although I only take 15mg now.
I've been on humira about 10 months and no liver problems at all.
Hope you get anti-tnf soon, it has helped me a lot.

I agree with what Doreen says Barbara. The drug that played havoc with my liver was leflunomide, and I had to stop it after about 6 months. I take humira - and only humira - and it has made a huge difference to my quality of life and to my mobility. Good luck with anti-TNF - I hope you can start it. I was in despair until humira, and I`ve been on it over two years now. Kathleen x PS There`s no alcohol ban with it either!!

all best barbara not on anti tnf on methotrexate and currently still having liver problems so at 15 mg. t care hun may anti tnf do wodners for u. lv melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

Liver- FINE on the anti-tnfs here Barbara
MTX- liver wobbled at the higher doses.
All "normal" now though

Hi Barbara,
I've been on the anti tnf Enbrel for almost 2 years now. After 20 years of RA, its the most effective drug I've had. I've had no liver problems whatsoever, or any side effects really. Unlike with MTX I do not need monthly blood tests and as Kathleen pointed out, alcohol is allowed!
Hope you start your anti tnf treatemtn soon and it works wonders for you.

Thank you all so much, I'm now beginning to feel quite excited about the treatment, and hopeful that it will work. My mind has been put at rest, at least for now, that an Anti-TNF drug is unlikely to effect my liver (fingers X!). My next appointment with the clinic is next week Tuesday and I'm hoping they'll be able to give me a start date for my treatment. The only thing I will have to do between now and the appointment is NOT to google about the side effects of these drugs  Love, Barbara XXXXXX

I agree with you there Barbara! Read the leaflet once and then forget about it!
Everything crossed for you that you can get onto the anti-tnfs at your next appointment.

Hi Barbara Just curious as i know like me you had liver issues with mtx. what other dmard did you try before going on anti-tnf? As I was put on hydroxyc and I wonder if this is a dmard. Its still early days with the hydroyc but if no improvement then the top up with another dmard is on the cards. I couldnt believe when i had just got over the anxiety of possible liver damage that the consultant was suggesting I add it on top.  Wishing you all the best with your new treatment Mari

Hi Mari, I was on Sulp first, then MTX, and refused to take hydroc, as I had taken it before for 6 months as an anti-malarial, and it did not suit me. I also thought that having had problems with the 2 other drugs (sulf & MTX) that hydroc would also cause problems with my liver and my rheumy tended to agree. To meet one of the criterias for Anti TNF, I think a patient has had to have failed at least 2 DMARDS,.hydroc I believe is also a DMARD. I take Milk Thistle a herb to protect my liver as there is a history of non alcohol related fatty liver disease in my family, for my sins I've also got one  Love, Barbara XXXXXX

Ello! Been on Humira alone since 2006 and bloods have always been fine. No side effects at all and joints been brilliant. Best thing thats happened to me since it all started. I very rarely take painkillers either. Usually only for the winter aches im sure we all get when its a wee bit chilly! Good luck with your treatment. xoxox Mmmmm, fuzzy.....

I've been on Enbrel for about 3 years, no probs with liver. Had probs with MTX before that though.
